What is Moon Plains, aka Sandathenna?

You might wonder how a flat plain serves as such an ideal vantage point. Allow me to explain the geography clearly. This location holds the distinction of being the only 360-degree panoramic viewpoint in the area, offering views of nine of Sri Lanka’s ten highest mountain peaks. You can also see Shanthipura and the Single Tree Hill Temple, which are the highest-located village and temple, respectively. These plains are at 6200 feet above MSL, as if it’s reaching for the heavens.

The best time to visit Moon Plains

This place opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. The best time to visit here is early in the morning. Getting an early start is always recommended when going to viewpoints, as the early weather is more favorable for sightseeing and the best overall experience. Then you can have the ultimate feel of mist, chilly vibes, and the last rays of sunrise. But if it’s raining or excessively misty, hang tight until it clears up. Some days it stays foggy even at 10 a.m. However, as the day progresses into afternoon, the area generally becomes much warmer.

The Journey to the Viewpoint

If you were late for the adventure, you have to wait until your safari jeep returns from the previous trip. Staff will issue you a numbered token and someone at the place will call it out when it’s your turn. So, keep in touch. Weekends can be quite crowded, as Moon Plains is a popular day-trip destination for locals, too. Picking a weekday will ensure fewer crowds and shorter waiting times. In order to protect this biodiversity hotspot, every vehicle must have a guide, and visitors are not allowed to get out of the vehicle except at designated spots. Thankfully, your cab driver doubles as your guide, ready to give you his expertise on everything about the place, which is already included in the safari package. The ride is a no-go for pregnant moms, folks with severe medical conditions, or those who have recently had surgery. Others can enjoy the bumpy, fun ride with each up and down.

Once you park, you should take a small walk to reach the viewpoint. But before that, you will see the mini world’s end at one corner of the land. Then, there is that breathtaking view of the Welimada plateau, the Uva Province, and the Central Province. Welcome to two different climatic zones at once. You may notice how trees have suddenly grown taller and different from those mini trees and bushes you passed earlier. Consequently, that is nature’s way of adapting to the new climatic zone.

Moon Plains Activities

While bumping along on your safari, you can see the extensive meadow touching the clouds. Furthermore, the maze of routes feels like the road to heaven. This is the perfect color combo of green, blue, and brown—a feast for the eyes. Short and stout trees are abundant in this area, as that is the only way to thrive under strong winds. Keep your eyes on our endemic animals, birds, and plants from this ecosystem, such as the dusky blue flycatcher. Also, you might spot wild boar families crossing the road, buffaloes ruminating, and Sri Lankan sambar deer. In addition, the fur coats of those buffaloes are a bit thicker than those of lowland breeds, keeping them warm and cozy. They’ve got plenty of good grass to snack on and lots of space to stray.

Now, let’s check out the top nine mountains we can see from the top ten. Pidurutalagala, Kirigalpoththa, Single Tree Mountain, and Namunukula are some of the highlights. Hey, hold onto your caps and hats here. This is a wind alert. Be mindful of the flyable things, as winds can be pretty strong here. Now, let’s go to that awesome viewpoint. Before climbing the stairs, take a peek underneath the deck structure to see directional signboards pointing toward key geographic landmarks. Get ready for the most entertaining activity. Scenic views and perfect photography sessions are the best to work with. This is a great photo booth for your Instagram and Facebook accounts. You may see those faraway mountains playing peek-a-boo with you through the fog, making the atmosphere heavenly. The driver might give you a buzz to let you know it’s time to leave, usually after about 30–40 minutes. I bet you’ll lose track of time, surrounded by all this nature.

But wait. The journey is yet to unfold. Seethaeliya Agro Park is eagerly awaiting your arrival. This park is a paradise for devout and novice home gardeners learning how natural environmental systems can be used in their gardens. You may see friendly bunnies hopping around with their white fur and ruby-like red eyes. Feed some carrots, beets, and cabbage leaves to those friendly guys. Also, there are some fish species in the ponds, adding another charm to the park. You don’t want to pay additional fees to visit here, and the previous Moon Plains ticket covers this place too. The garden is filled with numerous things that need to be explored. For example, I bet that you don’t have this specific aloe vera breed in your home. This garden gives off that perfect dreamy farm vibe with these bridges, mini islands, and huts. Oh! They even cultivate strawberries here. All these crops are pesticide-free, and you can buy some veggies for a reasonable price.
